Living Life to the Fullest Awards

The Living Life To The Fullest Awards are presented each year and recognise the importance of living a life that is vibrant, fun and fulfilling.

Award recipients are chosen from community members who represent positive ageing in their daily lives and who challenge the stereotypes associated with older people.

Living Life to the Fullest Award winners for 2017 are:

(Barbara) Anne Thompson

Anne, a volunteer and driver with Playford Council, also helps out with a wide variety of activities within the Palms Residential Village.  Anne arranges, drives and helps out at  the “See the Sights of the City of Playford” which is a program designed to give carers, and those socially isolated, opportunities to meet others and also see what is happening around Playford.

Anne also provides the menus, cooks and caters for up to 70 people at the Palms Residential Park as part of the regular lunch time socials.

If this is not enough, she volunteers at the Virginia Institute, rural program, joining in several of their activities, as well as helping with the usual washing up, cleaning etc.

Additional to this, Anne gives her time freely with the Northern Carers Network in Peachey Road, as a volunteer driver, with group 4 of the Time Out Group and as a volunteer on group 1.  These programs are developed to take out-care recipients on outings, giving the carer a well-earned break.

Anne volunteers with the Northern Carers Saturday Kids, for very young children with a disability and the Tons of Fun program for older children.

Anne acts as a volunteer on many other care programs, such as The Palms Carers and the Playford Rural Support group, assisting the coordinators with registration, collecting payments and general assistance.

She is also an active participant in the Playford Community Services Consumer Reference Group.

Anne is a worthy recipient of the Award, and in her 70s shows that age is no barrier to helping others fulfil their dreams.

John Skidmore

Initially John was the sole carer for his wife throughout her continued ill health; he attended to her needs, took her to doctor's appointments and generally looked after her wellbeing, nothing was too much trouble.

Whilst doing this he still had the energy and imagination to write and direct, creating humorous productions that are brilliantly designed to showcase the strengths and talents of each of the Grenville Players, through laughter, song & dance.  All scripts are cleverly inclusive, ensuring there is a role for everyone who wants to have a go.

2017 has not been the best year for John, as Sylvia passed away earlier in the year, but John, determined that the show must go on, has the most amazing love of life, a great sense of optimism and ensured that the Grenville Players once again performed together in their annual season of pantomime.

2017 Living Life to the Fullest Award nominees included Alice Stuart, Jeanne Pellas-Vanston, Barbara Bakkelo, Chris Browning, Alice Richardson, Sue Goode, Gloria Dennis, Brenda Kovaleff, Lorne Parry, Gail Sweet, Jaz Storey, Leopolda Cosgrove and the Playford Bowling Club Amalgamation Committee.
