- How to dispose of your hard waste
It is a myth that it is too hard to legally dispose of your hard waste at NAWMA.
Some people say the cost of correctly disposing of their rubbish contributes to their decision to illegally dump excess waste in Playford’s reserves and parks.
But the truth is that most of your household waste items can be taken to NAWMA for free recycling.
Items suitable for a hard waste service include:
- Furniture including carpets (must be rolled up) and mattresses (maximum of 2 per service).
- Refrigerators, stoves, washing machines, dishwashers & small kitchen appliances.
- Domestic household Items: e.g. toys, bikes, empty clean paint tins (with lids removed) and car rims (not tyres).
- Scrap metal.
- Electrical items (anything with a cord).
- Timber no longer than 2m, free of nails and bundled.
- Cardboard flattened & tied in bundles of 10 or less.
Items NOT suitable for a hard waste service include:
- General household waste or clothing.
- Green waste (plant clippings).
- Hazardous waste (e.g. asbestos, chemicals, batteries, ammunition, explosives and gas cylinders).
- Car bodies/car parts or tyres.
- Broken glass, mirrors, windows or panels of sheet glass.
- Paint tins containing wet paint.
- Construction/building materials, concrete, rocks or dirt.
- Fibreglass.
- Porcelain, ceramic or terracotta.
- Polystyrene.
On top of that, residents have the opportunity to access two hard-waste disposals each financial year, either by a pick-up by NAWMA or via self-delivery – meaning you can dispose of all your items for free.
NAWMA is also currently offering residents of the City of Playford free trailer hire to drop-off hard-waste items at the Resource Recovery Centre in Edinburgh North or Pooraka.
NAWMA’s resource recovery centre is located at Bellchambers Road, Edinburgh North, and is open seven days a week (8am to 4pm, Monday to Friday; 9am to 3pm Saturday and Sunday).
