- The Precinct opens its gates to grow community connection and creativity
The Precinct Community Hub at Smithfield Plains will showcase its commitment to community wellbeing, sustainability and creativity with an Open Day on Saturday 12 October.
A vibrant hub where many in the community find meaningful connections and support, the open day is a perfect opportunity for those who are curious about The Precinct and its services to come along and discover what is on offer behind the fence on Coventry Road at Smithfield Plains.
Free workshops and experiences will be held between 10am and 2.30pm, including kids’ activities, food tastings from the Healthy Food Co, a Paint and Plant Workshop, Sound Bath Meditation and a Kimchi & Sauerkraut Making Workshop.
City of Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty encouraged the community to pop into The Precinct and take advantage of the free activities.
“Throughout the year, The Precinct offers a range of activities, workshops and opportunities for our community to come together and learn new skills,” said Mayor Docherty.
“The open day will provide a snapshot of all the services on offer so makes it a perfect opportunity for anyone who is keen to explore what goes on.
“The Precinct is such a wonderful asset for Playford – it is home to the Healthy Food Co, the Playford Men’s shed, a café and a community garden,” the Mayor said.
“There is a regular timetable jam-packed with educational, wellbeing and lifestyle programs so there really is something for everyone.”
One of the main attractions of The Precinct is a much-loved community garden, which will be showcased during the open day with a gardening information session, access to the free seed library and grow cart along with a Nomad Nursery plant sale.
Community garden volunteer, Wendy Goss, will be at the open day to help answer any burning questions from the community about how to grow fresh produce and butterfly-attracting plants.
Wendy has been a volunteer since the garden’s inception almost four years ago, and enjoys exchanging knowledge with visitors.
“Lots of community members come to the garden each week,” she said.
“It is the people which keep me volunteering. It provides a positive space for the community to interact.”
